David Beckham's previous team, Real Madrid, won the Spanish League title earlier this week. His other team, Manchester United, is on the verge of winning the English League title on Sunday.
"I'm just hoping Manchester United wins the league," Beckham said Friday. "That would be a great year for me."
And his current team? The Galaxy is alone in third place in the Western Conference of the MLS standings, one point behind FC Dallas and a game ahead of Chivas USA.
OK, it's not quite the glamour of playing against Barcelona or Chelsea, but there is some MLS glitz tonight when the Galaxy (2-2-2) host New York at Home Depot Center at 7:30.
The Red Bulls (2-1-2) feature the league's rising star, 19-year-old forward Jozy Altidore, along with former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel, who might make Beckham feel he is back in Europe.
It might have been easier for Beckham if the game was in New York. He was there earlier this week with his wife, Victoria, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes to attend the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala.
No Red Bulls were invited, Beckham said.
The Galaxy are coming off a 2-2 tie with Utah, where they allowed two quick goals and then scrambled back to tie the game behind two Beckham goals. It was a slow start that failed to capitalize on the momentum of a four-game homestand.
"I don't know, that's soccer," Beckham said. "Sometimes it happens. Once we scored the second goal, the character of the team came out."
Forward Landon Donovan was a little more blunt.
"Our issue is we wanted to be more conservative on the road with the (artificial) turf and we let it affect us too much," Donovan said. "We finally said, (enough of) that."
The Donovan-Beckham combination seems to be working with 11 goals between them in six games.
"It's been building and it's getting better," Donovan said. "David came in the middle of the year (last season) and it was difficult for us at the end of the day.
"If he gets the ball and is under pressure, I know where I need to be. If he's in danger, I know where I need to run."
There will be a game at 4:30 featuring an array of "stars."
Among those scheduled to participate are cast members from American Idol, The Bachelor and Laguna Beach along with judges Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli from Dancing with the Stars.
Actual actors Julian Sands, Michael Sheen, and Anthony LaPaglia will also play with musicians Rivers Cuomo from the group Weezer and the Marley brothers.
Former pro players Alexi Lalas, Cobi Jones, and Frank LeBoeuf.
The Galaxy play an exhibition match against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Tuesday in Edmonton.
"I've never been there before," Beckham said.
"It might be a little bit cold."
Unlike last year, Beckham's remained healthy so far. One reason could be his offseason training stint in London with Arsenal from the Premier League.
"To train with Arsenal for a month would be good for anybody," he said.
"That helped me a lot."
