CLAREMONT - Behind the running of Aaron Holder and a stingy defense, Webb High School kept its playoff hopes alive with a 15-0 victory over visiting Pasadena Poly.
The loss eliminated the Panthers from CIF-Southern Section postseason play.
The Gauls (5-4) went 80 yards on an 18-play drive that ate up 9:06 in the first half for their first score.
Holder carried eight times for 42 of his 134 yards rushing, and finished the drive with a 2-yard score to give Webb a 6-0 lead with 8:55 remaining in the half.
The Gauls wasted no time on their next drive. Webb took over at their own 41-yard line after the defense forced Poly (4-5, 2-3) to a three-and-out. Gauls quarterback Brent Waldo handed the ball to Michael Tye and watched him sprint down the sideline for a 59-yard touchdown and a 12-0 lead.
Webb's defense set up the final score. Defensive back Jacob Rode intercepted Poly quarterback Neil Child at the Gauls' 15 and returned it 69 yards to the Panther 16. Four plays later, Jon Frisby kicked a 34-yard field goal to put Webb up, 15-0, with 5:43 left in the third quarter. Webb intercepted Child three times and recovered a fumble.
The victory creates a three-way tie for second place.
