LBSU on wrong end of sweep on Day 1

No. 20 Long Beach State fell to No. 22 Georgia, 10-6, in both teams' softball season opener Friday afternoon at Big League Dreams Ball Park. In their second game of the day, the 49 ers dropped a 7-1 decision to Southern Illinois.

In the opener, sophomore Brooke Turner pitched 61/3 innings with seven strikeouts. Sarah McCloud, who came in to pitch three innings of relief, picked up the win for Georgia.

Junior Ashley Weber led the 49 ers with two hits, two RBIs and one run scored. Senior Brianna Goad went 2-for-3, while classmates Jennifer Griffin and Danielle Linke both had a home runs.

The 49 ers had a 5-3 lead in the final inning before Georgia scored seven runs.

Against Southern Illinois, junior Bridgette Pagano recorded a career-high nine strikeouts but gave up seven earned runs and 11 hits in 62/3 innings.

Linke went 3-for-4 and had the 49 ers' lone RBI and junior Ashley Levine added two hits.

Danielle Glosson earned the complete-game victory for the Salukis, striking out eight.

Men's volleyball

No.7 Long Beach State started slow and couldn't rally, dropping a 30-24, 32-30, 33-31 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at No.4 Cal State Northridge.

LBSU (4-5, 3-3 MPSF) hit just .200 for the match. The 49 ers were led by Dean Bitter with 14 kills and a .286 hitting percentage and Josh Riley with 11 kills. Mike Klipsch finished with 24 assists and Dustin Watten had 11 digs.
