After Cerritos High defeated host Millikan, 7-6, in nonleague girls water polo game Thursday afternoon, Dons coach Peter Kemp was happy but not entirely pleased with the victory.
And he had good reason for his feelings.
Katherine Gabayeron scored a game-high four goals to help give reigning CIF Southern Section Division VII champs a 7-3 with less than 3 minutes to go. But the Dons almost gave the game away as the Rams rallied to make a game out of it.
"We played three-and-a-half quarters of good polo. I think it was the best we've played on some time," Kemp said. "But for some reason the defense breaks downs and gives up three goals. That made for a little game there."
Millikan (5-8) started its comeback with 2:21 left on a goal from Vanessa Canseco. A minute later, Christine MacLennan tallied her second goal to make it interesting. And with 31 seconds left, Canseco scored her third goal of the game on a man-up situation to pull the Rams within a goal.
However, the threat ended there as Cerritos (6-7) ran down the clock to secure the win.
"When we run our offense and do it the right way, it's hard for teams to defend us," Rams coach Al Reyes said, wishing his team would have found a way to do that before it was too late.
