L.A. officials protest Russia’s anti-gay laws

Joining a national protest against a series of new Russian laws making it illegal to discuss homosexuality with anyone under 18, Los Angeles officials on Tuesday hung a rainbow flag from the St. Petersburg Sister City sign across from City Hall.

The full City Council also called on the federal government to pass a law making it easier to provide sanctuary to any gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender person who has been discriminated against in Russia.

The city’s three gay elected officials, Controller Ron Galperin and Councilmen Mike Bonin and Mitch O’Farrell, were joined by Councilmen Tom LaBonge and Joe Buscaino in showing their support for the effort to change the Russian laws, particularly with the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
