Dream only partially realized

Whittier College student Anthony Walker was one of last year’s participants in the school’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

When he spoke about what the speech meant to him, he said it had a two-fold meaning.

“It’s a beautiful thing that we’ve come a long way since his speech, and some of what he spoke about has come into fruition,” he said.

“But at the same time, we still struggle in a lot of ways to reach his vision.”

There’s an inordinate amount of violence in the black community, said Walker, of San Diego. The prison and judicial systems in the U.S. put a disproportionate number of black men in jail.
